The OMSA forecasts that 2024 avian influenza outbreaks will equal or exceed 2023, when 12.5 million birds died or were culled. Sixteen avian influenza subtypes were detected, 10 of them highly pathogenic, across wild birds, poultry, live bird markets and mammals.
Expected large-scale poultry losses would cut chicken supply and could lift chicken prices, while reduced flock size would lower feed demand. The scale of the forecast makes this a meaningful market driver.
