H5N1 was confirmed in a pig on a central Oregon backyard farm, the first such case in a US pig, according to USDA. The pig was one of five on a farm where poultry were also infected, and USDA says the animals were not intended for commercial food.
Because the pig was not destined for commercial pork, USDA sees no near-term threat to the US pork supply, so price impact is minimal. Pigs can act as mixing vessels for flu viruses, so the finding is a watch item for future risk.
