A USDA Economic Research Service study estimates that removing China's nontariff barriers would raise its imports of beef, corn, pork and wheat. The study uses mid-2020 to mid-2021 data, which showed Chinese domestic prices above U.S. import prices by 57.5% for beef, 64% for corn, 213% for pork and 42% for wheat.
China imported more than $205 billion in agricultural products in 2021, including over $37 billion from the U.S.
The findings point to latent Chinese import demand for U.S. corn and wheat if trade barriers ease, but the study is a scenario analysis and does not itself change current flows.
After 1,040 past bullish report events, Corn moved a median +0.5% over 5 sessions (62% higher; middle half -0.9% to +2.0%), and +0.8% over 20.
After 769 past bullish report events, Wheat (SRW) moved a median +0.2% over 5 sessions (53% higher; middle half -1.4% to +2.0%), and +0.2% over 20.
