Soil moisture conditions were reviewed across major Midwest corn states in late March 2024 ahead of planting. Iowa saw warm, dry early March followed by cooler, wetter late March, and extreme drought in the state shrank to about 12% from nearly 20%.
Improving soil moisture before planting lowers the risk of a delayed or stressed start to the 2024 corn crop. The effect on prices is small at this stage.
After 445 past neutral weather events, Corn moved a median +0.1% over 5 sessions (52% higher; middle half -1.4% to +1.6%), and +0.7% over 20.
