Rice export prices from top Asian hubs fell in the week as Vietnamese and Thai traders competed with lower Indian offers. Bangladesh tightened COVID-19 lockdown measures, prompting panic buying and higher domestic rates, and its state grains buyer tendered for 50,000 tonnes.
Virus spread in southern Vietnam was also hampering rice transport.
Lockdown-driven domestic buying and transport disruption support regional import demand, while cheaper Indian and Thai offers pressure export quotations lower. Net effect is weaker export prices with logistics costs rising.
