Hot, dry weather in Europe since mid-May has pushed European malting barley prices up about two-thirds to a five-year high of €230 per ton. Consultant RMI Analytics says production in some regions has fallen as much as 50 percent and forecasts a shortfall of nearly 500,000 tons in spring malting barley.
The EU is the world's largest exporter of spring malting barley, so the shortfall tightens global barley supply and supports feed and malting barley prices.
