US phosphate producer Itafos is in advanced talks with Indian companies over a Guinea-Bissau rock phosphate project, with an NDA already signed. Itafos CEO David Delaney said China, Morocco, Saudi Arabia and Jordan currently restrict US phosphate supply to only Canada and Brazil.
Developing the project depends on building a port for shipping rock to DAP producers.
Export restrictions from major phosphate producers keep global DAP supply tight, and a new source would only help if the project is developed. Near-term price impact is limited because the project is still at an early stage.
After 36 past neutral trade events, DAP moved a median +0.7% over 5 sessions (64% higher; middle half -0.0% to +2.1%), and +0.4% over 20.
