Falling Rhine water levels under a heatwave are forcing barges to sail with only about 20% of capacity. Tanker barge rates from Rotterdam to Karlsruhe climbed from about €45 per tonne at end-June to €60-70 per tonne, with surcharges imposed across the river.
Partial loading and surcharges raise the per-tonne cost of moving bulk cargo on the Rhine, adding to delivered costs for imported feed ingredients in Germany. Rain forecast from July 17 may ease conditions later.
