Sharply falling Rhine water levels in Germany threaten a shortage of barge capacity on a corridor carrying about 300 million tons a year between Rotterdam, Antwerp and German industry. Western Europe has had record heat and drought, and barges are carrying much less cargo.
Reduced barge capacity raises freight rates and limits volumes of bulk goods, tightening logistics for imported grain and feed ingredients into Germany. The disruption supports higher delivered feed costs in the region.
