New Zealand millers reported a 500% rise in flour demand under lockdown, but the Arable Food Industry Council said there is no grain shortage. Supermarket shortages came from a shift from 20kg bakery bags to 1.5kg retail packs.
The council said a good harvest leaves farmers well placed to supply mills.
Adequate domestic supply means the demand surge does not directly tighten wheat markets. Stronger milling demand supports local grain prices in the short term.
