The USDA's January WASDE report cut the US corn yield estimate, reducing production and lowering 2024-25 US ending stocks to 1.54 billion bushels from 1.738 billion in December. Global corn carryout was also trimmed to 293.34 million metric tons from 296.44 million, and corn futures rallied on the news.
Tighter US and global corn stocks support prices, but the reduction may already be priced in. Attention shifts to Brazil's second-crop planting, where weather problems could add upside, while expanding Brazilian plantings could cap gains.
After 1,040 past bullish report events, Corn moved a median +0.5% over 5 sessions (62% higher; middle half -0.9% to +2.0%), and +0.8% over 20.
