CattleFax analyst Randy Blach told the Wyoming Agricultural Bankers Conference that the cattle industry has remained profitable but will not return to very high calf prices. He noted that August feeder futures fell from $1.49 to $1.38 in three weeks and that cash markets dropped from $1.20 to $1.12 in two weeks.
A $12 price swing in two weeks shows how quickly feeder and cash values can move, which raises risk for feedlot and cow-calf margins. Buyers should expect continued volatility as prices adjust from earlier highs.
