A University of Kentucky livestock economist reported that fed cattle prices fell by more than $10 per cwt from late February to early April 2018 and had partly recovered by early May. December live cattle futures were down $7 to $8 per cwt from late winter, and that lower outlook was feeding into feeder cattle values.
Lower expected fed cattle prices for late 2018 are pulling feeder cattle values down, which affects the cost of cattle for feedlots. Feeder buyers should expect pressure on calf and feeder prices unless fed cattle expectations recover.
