Iran lifted its temporary ban on rice imports, effective November 22, 2017 through July 22, 2018, by a directive from the Ministry of Industries, Mining and Trade. Iran imports about 800,000 tonnes of rice annually to cover a shortfall between consumption of 3 million tonnes and domestic output of 2.2 million tonnes.
Import tariffs stand at 40%.
Reopening Iran's import channel adds meaningful demand for rice from suppliers such as India, Pakistan, Thailand and Vietnam. That supports export prices for rice during the coming months.
