Retail prices of coarse rice such as Swarna and BR-11 in Dhaka rose by about Tk 2 a kg in a week, to Tk 52-55 a kg, while wholesale markets also posted increases of Tk 1.0-1.5. Traders blamed persistently high paddy prices during the Aman harvest, and some experts pointed to market syndication.
Higher paddy and mill-gate prices pass through to retail rice, so local buyers face rising costs even during harvest season with record imports. Sustained paddy strength keeps domestic rice prices firm.
