Boxed beef prices at the end of 2020 were roughly flat year over year, with food service cuts down and retail cuts up. Grain and oilseed prices were significantly higher than a year earlier, with cash corn about 22% higher, sorghum over 50% higher, wheat about 30% higher and soybeans 35% higher.
DDGS prices were about 39% higher than at the end of 2019.
Higher feed grain and DDGS prices raise feedlot ration costs and change the type of feeder cattle buyers prefer. This shifts cattle production patterns even if total output is not greatly affected.
