Low Mississippi River levels pushed the St. Louis barge spot rate to a record of $105.85 per tonne in the week of October 10 before it fell to $72.58 the following week. Barges were light-loaded, groundings halted traffic, and some shippers delayed deliveries.
Higher barge rates raise the cost of moving US grain to export terminals and can widen the gap between interior and Gulf prices. Delayed shipments also tighten near-term export availability.
