NDSU livestock economist Tim Petry says the discovery of New World screwworm in the US should not have a lasting market impact, since the parasite does not affect meat safety. He notes that Mexican feeder cattle imports of 20,000 to 25,000 head a week have been cut off since 2024, and cattle markets were already high before the US case and rose further after it.
Analysts see the outbreak as mainly a perception risk, so any price effect should be short-lived. Ongoing loss of Mexican feeder supply remains the main support for cattle prices.
