Canadian analysts Randy Strychar and Shawna Mathieson forecast a 12% to 13% rise in Canadian oat plantings for 2017, largely taken from spring wheat. Their forecasts were above Statistics Canada's 6% to 7% estimate.
Uncertainty persists over oat acres lost to snow at harvest, and quality from the unharvested acres is a concern.
A bigger oat crop would add supply and weigh on oat prices, while less spring wheat area could support wheat prices. Quality problems from the 2016 harvest could limit usable feed oat supply.
