USDA's January 31 cattle report put the January 1, 2017 all cattle and calves inventory at 93.6 million head, up 1.8% year on year. The 2016 calf crop was estimated at 35.1 million head, 2.9% larger than 2015, and the analysis concludes the industry remains in expansion mode.
A growing herd means more beef and feeder supply ahead, which is bearish for cattle prices and suggests steady demand for feed grains and by-products from feedlots.
