Basmati exporters expect higher paddy sowing this season after a good monsoon forecast and better farmer returns last year. Basmati output is roughly 6.6 million tonnes, but export volumes are expected to stay near last year's level of about four million tonnes because of weak demand in the Gulf and EU.
Larger sowing should lower paddy purchase prices for processors and exporters, which points to softer basmati export prices even as margins may improve.
