USDA's July cattle on feed report showed June placements into large feedlots up 16 percent year over year at 1.77 million head, about 10 percent above analyst expectations. Total on-feed numbers on July 1 exceeded 10.8 million, 465,000 head above last year.
Surprisingly strong placements and high feedlot inventories signal more fed cattle ahead and robust grain demand from feedlots, while the profitable feedlot returns encourage continued placements.
