Industry consultant M R Chandran argues the EU is unlikely to create its own palm oil standards and will likely accept RSPO certification, as the EU requires only 'certified sustainable' palm oil. He says the RSPO's new principles and criteria are expected in late 2018.
Uncertainty over a possible EU ban on palm oil and other vegetable oils weighs on Malaysian and Indonesian export expectations, but the consultant's view that certification will suffice reduces the perceived near-term risk.
