An opinion piece explains that the Australian dollar's rise above 80 US cents is mainly a reflection of broad US dollar weakness, which fell about 3.5% in January. The author questions whether the rally can last given the dollar's trajectory.
Dollar weakness supports dollar-priced commodities and can encourage importers to buy. The piece is analysis of currency drivers rather than a new market-moving event.
