African bonds, equities and local debt have underperformed emerging-market peers since March amid a broad emerging-market sell-off that has erased over $1 trillion from developing equity markets this quarter. The selloff was triggered by a strengthening dollar, rising US Treasury yields and escalating US-China trade tensions.
Capital outflows and a stronger dollar tighten financing and weaken African currencies, which can raise import costs for feed ingredients and slow demand in key importing markets.
