The IAEA, FAO, USDA and COPEG launched a project to help Latin American countries prevent re-entry of New World screwworm into Central and North America and to suppress it in parts of South America and the Caribbean. The project uses surveillance, emergency response and the sterile insect technique.
Screwworm control keeps Mexican cattle imports flowing to the US, so successful containment supports livestock supply stability and avoids import bans.
