The USDA extended the January 15 deadline for farmers to apply for trade-dispute aid because of the partial government shutdown. About $9.5 billion in direct payments has been set aside for growers of soybeans, corn, wheat and other crops, and many farmers were delayed by harvest conditions.
Extended aid deadlines let farmers keep marketing and planting decisions based on payments rather than forced sales, which limits near-term selling pressure on feed grains. The change is a timing adjustment rather than a new source of demand.
