The IEA analysis finds the United States and Brazil together produced 84% of global fuel ethanol and 26% of biodiesel in 2017. It examines how feedstock costs, production technology, energy prices and policy affect biofuel competitiveness in both countries.
Feedstock costs such as corn, sugarcane and soybeans drive biofuel break-even prices, so shifts in relative competitiveness can change where and how much biofuel feedstock demand arises.
