Brazilian port operators, including units of Cargill and Bunge, plan to propose lower Panama Canal tariffs for grain shipments to China. The study argues that shipping via the Cape of Good Hope is about $206,000 cheaper per ship at current tariffs.
If tariffs fall, Brazilian soybean exports to Asia could become cheaper and faster to ship, supporting Brazil's export competitiveness against U.S. supplies.
