CME lean hog futures rallied on June 27 on short-covering and position squaring before month and quarter end, after prices hit multi-month lows earlier that week. USDA's quarterly hog report showed the US herd on June 1 up 3.6% from a year earlier, near trade expectations, and US pork export sales were solid with 10,400 tonnes sold to China.
A growing hog herd adds supply and pressures lean hog prices, though short-covering and firm export demand offered temporary support. Feed costs and export demand from China remain the key swing factors for hog margins.
