A farm management analyst warns that much of the Minnesota, Iowa and South Dakota corn and soybean crop was planted 2 to 3 weeks late and accumulated fewer growing degree days than normal by late August. Less than one-third of Minnesota corn had reached dent stage, leaving maturity at risk before first frost.
Late development raises the risk of frost damage and lower yields in the northern Corn Belt, which supports corn and soybean prices.
