Chinese pork prices rose 46.7% year on year in August, adding 1.08 percentage points to consumer inflation of 2.8%. Pork accounts for more than 60% of Chinese meat consumption, so the price spike is hitting household budgets.
Record pork prices encourage herd rebuilding and feed demand over time, but in the near term they reflect a shrunken hog supply. This is supportive for hog prices and feed ingredients tied to pig production.
