A bipartisan group of more than 50 House members urged USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack to make school low-fat flavored milk flexibility permanent. The USDA currently allows this flexibility through the 2021-22 school year.
The letter cites data showing 79% of 9 to 13-year-olds fall short of recommended dairy intake.
Permanent flexibility could raise school milk sales, which would add modest demand for fluid milk. The effect on prices is small because school volumes are a small share of the total market.
