The UK National Farmers Union is lobbying for financial support to cover culling costs for non-notifiable H6N1 avian influenza, which has been confirmed on farms in Northern Ireland, Scotland, England and Co Monaghan. Culling costs are estimated at £53,000 for 32,000 free-range layers and £105,000 for 150,000 broilers.
Ongoing avian influenza outbreaks reduce poultry flock sizes and feed demand in the UK and Ireland. The effect on feed prices is limited unless outbreaks spread substantially.
