USDA's Economic Research Service projects US rice imports of 32.5 million hundredweight for 2019/20, up 9% from a year earlier and a third consecutive record. Demand for Asian aromatic varieties such as Thai jasmine and Indian and Pakistani basmati drives the increase.
Rising imports take a larger share of the US rice market, which can limit domestic rice price gains. The effect on feed-grain markets is minimal because these are mainly aromatic table rice varieties.
