China's agriculture ministry official Yang Zhenhai said pork supplies will be under pressure in the second quarter due to a low production base, import uncertainty and recovering consumption, with prices possibly peaking around September. Pork prices hit record highs in October 2019 after African swine fever killed millions of pigs, but have fallen since early February.
The sow herd rose 2.8% and piglets 7.3% in March from the prior month.
Expected tightening supply later in 2020 supports pork prices and underpins demand for feed grains and meal from importers, though recovering hog numbers cap the upside.
