An EWG analysis of USDA records finds farm subsidy payments grew from about $4 billion in 2017 to over $20 billion in 2020, largely from ad hoc trade-war programs. The share going to the largest farms also rose.
Subsidy reform debate under the new administration could change future payment design, but no immediate change to crop or livestock supply is announced.
