India banned exports of broken rice and imposed a 20% export tax on several rice varieties from September 9. Nomura says the Philippines and Indonesia are most exposed, since India supplies about 40% of global rice shipments.
India is the largest rice exporter, so removing broken rice and taxing other grades tightens global supply and lifts Asian rice prices. Importers that depend on Indian rice face higher costs.
