At least 18 people died in the past 24 hours as an unusually late monsoon brought heavy rain to northern India. Schools closed in several cities, and the IMD expected more heavy rain in Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and parts of Rajasthan.
Late rain disrupts harvesting and field conditions for kharif crops, which can tighten domestic rice and pulse supplies and support local prices.
