Oklahoma State extension specialist Derrell Peel reviewed the October USDA cattle reports. Placements rose 106% from 2022, while marketings were 89% of last year's total, leaving feedlot supplies larger than expected.
Heifers make up 40% of feedlot inventory, the highest since 2001.
Larger feedlot supplies and heavy heifer marketings point to more near-term cattle supply and lower fed cattle prices. Beef cow liquidation also suggests tight herd rebuilding over the longer term.
