Chinese pig prices have trended upward for several weeks after a government-directed reduction in the sow herd target from 41 million to 39 million. The Chinese sow herd is now just under 40 million, and the number of pigs fell 4.9% from October 2023 to March 2024.
A shrinking Chinese hog herd reduces feed demand over time, which is bearish for soybean meal and corn imports, while firmer hog prices may eventually support more feeding later.
