Sri Lanka's Meteorology Department warned that below-average rainfall from October could reduce the 2025 Maha rice crop if La Niña develops. La Niña usually brings weaker inter-monsoon rains, which cut reservoir levels needed for the main season harvest.
A smaller Sri Lankan rice crop would have a limited effect on global rice prices, since Sri Lanka is a small producer and importer, so the impact is mainly local.
