USDA's April Cattle on Feed report showed the national herd smaller year over year, and cattle on feed beyond 150 days continued to grow. USDA analyst Anthony Fischer said fed cattle are selling at record prices, with March fed prices averaging nearly $208/cwt.
March feeder steer prices were up roughly 12% from 2024.
Strong fed cattle prices and growing marketings of older cattle reflect a shrinking herd, which supports feeder cattle values. Cattle marketed faster use feed more quickly, which affects feed buying patterns.
