ABARES forecasts Western Australia's 2025/26 wheat output to fall about 13% because of hot autumns, dry soils and erratic rain. Barley plantings rose 5.6% to 1.9 million hectares, and canola plantings rose 6.3%, although northern canola sowings were cut by more than half.
A smaller Western Australian wheat crop tightens wheat supply, while a larger barley area adds feed grain supply, so wheat and barley price effects partly offset each other.
