USDA's July Cattle Inventory report put the US cattle herd at 94.2 million head as of July 1, 2025, down 1% from two years earlier and the lowest mid-year level since the report began. Beef cows and the 2025 calf crop were also down about 1%.
A shrinking herd and smaller calf crop limit beef supply, supporting cattle prices and keeping beef prices elevated.
