Ocean freight rates for U.S. grain shipments rose sharply in Q3 2026, with U.S. Gulf-to-Japan rates averaging $72.76 per metric ton, up 34% year over year. Rising bunker fuel costs and Panama Canal restrictions that forced longer routings are cited as drivers.
Elevated freight narrows the export margin for U.S. grain and raises delivered costs to Asian feed buyers, reinforcing demand for Brazilian and Argentine origins. Fuel and canal constraints keep upward pressure on rates.
