The upper Mississippi River reopened early, with the Motor Vessel Crockett first through the Hastings locks and followed by four more tows reaching St. Paul. Grain and fertilizer can again move on the upper river, where ice in Lake Pepin normally delays early-season tows.
Earlier barge access for grain and fertilizer improves river logistics and can modestly ease freight costs and fertilizer delivery timing in the Upper Midwest.
