EFSA reported around 5,300 HPAI detections in poultry, captive and wild birds across 36 EU/EEA countries and the UK in the 2021-2022 season, the largest on record. About 46 million birds were culled on 2,398 poultry outbreaks, and HPAI H5 may have become endemic in European wild birds.
Heavy culling reduces EU poultry supply and raises demand for substitute proteins, supporting feed grain and meal use while lifting chicken prices.
