The Texas Animal Health Commission and USDA confirmed Type A H5N1 avian influenza in dairy cattle in Texas and Kansas. The virus is affecting older dairy cows in those states and in New Mexico, causing illness in the herds.
Infected dairy herds can lose milk output, which tightens raw milk supply and supports Class III milk prices. Spread to more herds would increase the pressure.
