USDA's March Prospective Plantings report projects US spring wheat area at 14.2 million acres, down 7% from 2018, including 12.4 million acres of hard red spring. Durum area is forecast to fall 25% as North Dakota farmers switch to hard red spring because of premium spreads.
Weather and price concerns are cited as further reasons for lower spring wheat planting.
Smaller spring wheat acreage tightens expected supply and supports spring wheat and milling wheat prices. The shift away from durum also reflects changing premium relationships among wheat classes.
